The GLE Substance Use and Addictions Leadership Collaborative invites you to attend our forthcoming webinar: Breaking the algorithms – something for everyone on September 16th. (Follow link below for time zones near you).

The Webinar will highlight the ‘behind the scenes’ nature of how data and algorithms have developed, how industries use algorithms and media to sell harmful commodities, causing addictive behaviour; and social media, empowering and disempowering factors, self perception, image and reality.

Our speakers:

Professor Nicholas Carah is Director of the Centre for Digital Cultures and Societies in the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences and Professor in the School of Communication and Arts with the University of Queensland. He is an Associate Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society, and a Chief Investigator on ARC Discovery and Linkage projects. Nicholas’ research examines the algorithmic and participatory advertising model of digital media platforms, with a sustained focus on digital alcohol marketing. Amongst a number of authored and co-authored publications, Nicholas is the author of the text book Media and Society: Power, Platforms & Participation (2021 Nicholas is a Director and Deputy Chair of the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education.

Dr Alina Machande is a lecturer in Clinical Psychology at Vinzenz Palotti University, Germany and a psychotherapist specialised on psychodynamic psychotherapy. She obtained her PhD in Psychology at the University of Bath, UK. The research for her PhD was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Centre for Research and Evidence on Security Threats. Alina’s Doctoral Thesis was on Exploring pathways to deviant and conformist behaviour in cyberspace.
